Audiovisual Supervisor, Resident Productions

Job Summary/Purpose 

Responsibilities of this position include supervision of audio/visual production at The Studio Theatre and serving as liaison with artists, touring technicians, event clients, contractors, and staff. The Audiovisual Supervisor is responsible for the planning of the audio and video systems needed to reproduce/reinforce the audiovisual design in the theatre, and the configuration of communications systems for each production.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Lead installation, set up, and tuning, of sound and video equipment; overseeing work of various staff and temporary workers to deliver projects on schedule  
  • Planning, coordinating, installing, and striking of all audio, projection, back stage communication systems and video monitoring equipment as needed per production.  
  • Test, maintain, repair, inventory, and acquire appropriate audiovisual equipment  
  • Gather and process information necessary for support of shows and events  
  • Advise on methods, processes, and equipment in support of artistic goals as well as develop and update long range plans for improvement and expansion of all equipment.  
  • Work with Production Management and Technical Direction to generate and maintain show specific and departmental budgets  
  • Coordinate with other departments on any elements that share responsibilities, such as units with speakers built into them or that need to produce sound  
  • Attending production meetings or other meetings as necessary 
  • Knowledgeable on how to tune, operate, and manage up to 24 channels of wireless microphones, including mic-ing up actors or performers  
  • Create, read and interpret setup documents per production, including stage plots, patch sheets, and use this information to correctly and efficiently setup for performances at The Studio Theatre  
  • Supervise the day-to-day work of the audiovisual staff including supervision of personnel, vendors, projects/events, and select budgets  
  • Serve as audio system engineer for events as required, perform as member of Audio run crew for productions as needed  
  • Support other departments as directed (assist with lighting hangs, strikes, orchestra shell installs/strikes, etc.)  
  • Other tasks as assigned.  

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Audio Technician 

Minimum Requirements 

  • A combination of; 3 to 5 years of theatrical audio and video experience, or education in Audio Design and Theatrical Production or equivalent degree  
  • Qualified applicants will have a broad background in sound reinforcement, wireless frequency coordination, digital mixing consoles, audio communication and monitor systems, and maintenance of theatrical audio equipment 
  • Experience with overhead rigging, QLab software, and digital audio networking (Dante Level 1 certification preferred) 
  • A strong working knowledge of line-by-line mixing and scene programming in a theatrical setting 
  • Proficient in audio mixing, recording, and editing 
  • Experience with projection mapping and programming 
  • Familiarity and competence with a wide range consoles required. DAW and or Waves Plugins Experience preferred.   
  • Experience with Behringer and Yamaha CL/QL family of consoles preferred 
  • Experience with Vectorworks  
  • Flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed 
  • Prompt and regular attendance is a requirement of this position   
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a Microsoft Office365 ecosystem 
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with supervisors, peers, and internal and external clients

  • Comprehensive understanding of theatre terminology 
  • Work with intermediate mathematical concepts.  

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands 

  • A broad range of physical movement, including prolonged sitting, standing, climbing ladders, reaching, twisting and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. 
  • Grasping and gripping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in operating equipment, using tools and preparing written material. 
  • Working at a height exceeding 50 feet with required fall protection equipment and mitigations (catwalks, personnel/equipment lifts, etc.) 
  • Near and far vision in reading, operating equipment, and viewing productions. 
  • The need to be able to lift, drag, and/or push  materials weighing up to 50 pounds using appropriate tools  
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is moderately exposed to moving mechanical parts and hazards. There is a moderate level of noise in the work environment. There are instances when the employee experiences wet or humid conditions, works in high places, experiences fumes – mists-gases and chemical hazards, runs a risk of electrical shock, vibration and burn hazards. The employee will be exposed to theatrical haze, fog, and strobe effects.
