Shop Swing - SigPro Studio
Job Summary/Purpose
The Production Swing is an integral part of the production team at The SigPro Studio. This position will swing in as needed to support production departments throughout the season. The Shop Swing will assist with projects and activities across the Costume, Props, and Carp shops in support of productions at The SigPro Studio
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities for this position include the following; While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, Management reserves the right to revise the job or to require that other or different functions to be performed when circumstances change or exigencies require (this includes but is not limited to emergencies, changes in personnel, workload, rush jobs or technology developments)
Props & Costume Shop ( ~75)
- Based on skill and experience the Swing will assist with costume and properties construction which could include sewing, alterations, crafting, graphics creation, carpentry, scenic painting, etc..
- Perform laundry, steaming, dry cleaning runs, and other care and maintenance for costume pieces used in the current production as needed and directed by the Costume Shop Supervisor.
- Assist with the painting of scenery under the guidance of the Resident Scenic and Props Designer.
- Maintain, repair, inventory, and track all props and costuming assets in storage, including updating online stock database.
- Assist with administrative tasks for the costume and props departments including but not limited to facilitating communications with designers, contractors, vendors, and renters.
- Escalate and communicate safety, patron, security, and high-level technical or hospitality issues to the relevant parties as needed.
Scenic/Carpentry Shop ( ~25%)
- Under the direction of the Associate Technical Director: read and interpret build plans and diagrams in order to accurately cut, build, paint, install, and strike basic scenic elements for production at The Studio.
- Participate in scenic, AV, LX, and other load-ins, sets, strikes, changeovers, and load-outs for productions at The Studio and occasionally for large touring productions at The Sharon PAC.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- None
Minimum Requirements
- Two years of professional industry experience in theatre/live events or technical theatre, or equivalent formal education in a related field is required.
- Discretion, courtesy, and respect while working with performing artists, discussing potentially sensitive information such as body dimensions, while working in the costume shop.
- Attention to detail, punctuality, hospitality, and humility are necessary for the success of this position. Ability and enthusiasm to learn and operate a variety of backstage theatrical with guidance from various department leads.
- Work with intermediate mathematical concepts.
- Ability to learn, use, and leverage technology in the course of your work and become highly proficient in operating within an Office365 environment, particularly Outlook and Teams
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with supervisors, peers, and internal and external clients.
Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands
- Working at heights up to 25 feet (with required fall protection as needed), including accessing and working in catwalks, personnel/equipment lifts, scaffolding, straight and a-frame ladders, etc.
- Working in a shop environment with ventilation (not air conditioned) with ample breaks and access to cooled spaces, cold water, and restrooms.
- Working late nights and weekends.
- Prolonged periods of standing, working with power tools and other equipment, etc.
- Lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted, up to 150 pounds assisted or with tools.
- Exposure to loud sounds, flashing lights, and theatrical haze and fog effects.
- Exposure to hazards such as chemicals, flammable materials, high voltage, trip hazards, overhead work hazards.
